May The Best Turkey Win!

We are hosting our first-ever Turkey Competition, and it’s going to be a great one! There are 3 ways to win, submitting a top 3 bird, submitting any bird and winning a weekly draw.

Registration will begin March 27th and you will have from April 25th-May 31st, 2025 to submit your bird. Turkeys will be scored on weight, spur length and beard length. The 3 successful hunters scored on the NWTF scale at Shooter’s Choice with the highest-scoring turkeys will win amazing prizes donated by us. There will also be 5 weekly draws with great prizes for anyone who purchased a sticker as well as a successful hunter draw with 2 winners for anyone who submitted a turkey, in person or online.

The Rules:

As a requirement, each participant must purchase a sticker from us for $25.00 to participate and will automatically be entered into the 5 weekly draws. Each participant must also have a valid Ontario turkey tag for 2025 that Shooter’s Choice must confirm matches the name on the submitted contest. To make it fair, hunters must be registered for the competition 24 hours before shooting their bird for it to count. You can bring your bird in to be measured at Shooter’s Choice any time during store hours (or Sundays 12pm-3pm and Mondays 9am-3pm) or submit it online. The 3 largest birds by NWTF standards measured by Shooter’s Choice staff will each win one of the top 3 prizes. Those who email their submission will be entered into the successful hunter draws. Email [email protected] with the subject of [Turkey Competition 2025 Entry] to submit online. Only one bird per license per entry. (Secondary tags require secondary entry)

How To Score Your Bird:

Step 1:

Weigh your bird in pounds and ounces and convert the ounces to decimal form by dividing it by 16. (See conversion chart below for help). Then add the pounds to the ounces in decimal form, and that will be the weight score.

Step 2:

Measure each spur in inches. Spurs must be measured along the outside center, from the point at which the spur protrudes from the scaled leg skin to the tip of the spur. Add the spur measurements from both legs together and multiply the combined length of the spurs by 10. This is the score for the turkey’s spurs.

Step 3:

Measure the beard length in inches (a beard must be measured from the center point of the protrusion of the skin to the tip) and convert it to decimal form by dividing it by 16. Next, multiply the beard length figure by 2; this is the score you receive for the beard length.

If you have an atypical bird (multiple beards), measure each beard, convert them to a decimal number, then add those figures together and multiply by two. This is the number of points you receive for your turkey’s beards.

Step 4:

Add together the scores for weight, spurs and beard(s): This is the score you receive for your turkey.

Frequently Asked Questions

No problem, turkeys not weighted at the store can still be submitted into the successful hunter draw via email to [email protected]. Put [Turkey Contest 2025 Entry] in the subject and include:

  • a photo of your turkey
  • a photo of you with your turkey
  • a clear picture of your notched tag
  • your legal name (as seen on your Ontario Turkey Tag)
  • your phone number

Each participant is allowed one turkey per entry for up to 2 turkeys total (As per Ontario hunting regulations). But you absolutely may purchase more than 2 entry’s for a higher chance of winning the weekly draws. More purchases does not increase your chances or submissions to the successful hunter draws or top 3 birds.

Any part of the bird that has been removed or fallen off during harvesting will not count towards its score, to ensure accuracy.

If you are able to bring your bird to the store, come in any time the store is open (and extra hours on Sundays and Mondays). When you arrive please leave your bird outside or in your car and either call the store or go in to speak to an employee in Shooter’s Choice and someone will come out to measure your bird.
